Psalm 18 Prayed

Psalm 18 Prayed
Praise for the sufferings
and victory of Christ

Praise for what Christ suffered for me
   I love you, O Lord, my strength.
            You are my rock, my fortress
            and my deliverer;
   You are my God my rock,
            in whom I take refuge.
   Your are my shield and the horn of my salvation,
            my stronghold.
   I call to you, the  Lord who is worthy of praise,
            and I am saved from my spiritual enemies,
   only because of the victory of your Son Jesus,
            what he endured on the cross:

   The cords of death entangled Jesus;
            the torrents of destruction overwhelmed him.
   The cords of the grave coiled around my Saviour;
            the snares of death confronted him.
   In his distress he called to you, his Father;
            He cried to you, O God, for help.
   From your temple you heard his voice;
            his cry came before you, into your ears.
   And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud
            voice,
            he gave up his spirit.
   At that moment the curtain of the temple
            was torn in two from top to bottom.
   The earth shook and the rocks split.
            The earth trembled and quaked,
            and the foundations of the mountains shook;
            they trembled because you were angry.
   Smoke rose from your nostrils, O God;
            consuming fire came from your mouth,
            burning coals blazed out of it.
   You parted the heavens and came down;
            dark clouds were under your feet.
   You mounted the cherubim and flew;
            you soared on the wings of the wind.

   It was now about the sixth hour,
            and darkness came over the whole land
            until the ninth hour,
            for the sun stopped shining.
   You made darkness your covering,
            your canopy around you—
            the dark rain clouds of the sky.
   Out of the brightness of your presence
            clouds advanced,
            with hailstones and bolts of lightning.

   You thundered from heaven, O Lord;
            the voice of the Most High resounded.
   You shot your arrows and scattered
            your spiritual enemies,
            great bolts of lightning and routed them.
   And having disarmed the powers and authorities,
            you made a public spectacle of them
            triumphing over them by the cross.
   The valleys of the sea were exposed
            and the foundations of the earth laid bare
    at your rebuke, O Lord,
            at the blast of breath from your nostrils.
  Jesus called out to you with a loud voice,
            “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”
   When he had said this, he breathed his last.

   You reached down from on high
            and took hold of Jesus;
            you drew him out of the deep waters of death.
   You rescued him from his
            powerful enemy Satan,
   from all his foes, who were too strong for his
            mortal body.
   They confronted him in the day
            of his crucifixion,
             but you were his support.
   You brought him out into a spacious place;
            you rescued him because you delighted in him.
   You brought Jesus into his kingdom,
            and that day you even brought
             the criminal on the cross
            to be with him in paradise.

   You, Lord God, dealt with Jesus
            according to his righteousness;
   according to the cleanness of his hands
            you have rewarded him.
   He appeared so that he might take away our sins.
            And in him is no sin.
   For he kept your ways, O Lord;
            He did no evil by turning from you.
   All your laws were before him;
            He did not turn away from your decrees.
   He was blameless before you
            and kept himself from sin.
   You rewarded him according
            to his righteousness, O Lord,
   according to the cleanness of his hands
            in your sight.

My response of delight and confidence
   Now, to the faithful you can show yourself faithful,
            to the blameless you are able to show
            yourself blameless,
   to those you have purified by the blood of Jesus,
            you can show yourself pure,
            but to the crooked you show yourself shrewd.
   You save those humble enough to admit
            their need of Jesus,
   but bring low those whose eyes are haughty;
            who say they have no need of your grace.

   You, O Lord, keep my lamp burning;
            my God who turns my darkness into light.
   Because of the victory of Jesus,
            with your help, I can advance against a troop;
            with my God I can scale a wall.

   As for you, O God, your way is perfect;
            Your Word the Bible is flawless.
   You are a shield
            for all who take refuge in Jesus.
   For who is God besides you, O Lord?
            And who is the Rock except Jesus?
   It is you, O God, who arms me with strength
            and makes my way perfect.
   You make my feet like the feet of a deer;
            you enable me to stand on the heights.
   You train my hands for battle;
            my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
   You give me your shield of victory,
            for Christ my Saviour has gone before me.
   Your right hand sustains me;
            you stoop down to make me great.
   You broaden the path beneath me,
            so that my ankles do not turn.

   Jesus pursued my spiritual enemies
            and overtook them;
            He did not turn back till they were destroyed.
    He crushed them so that they could not rise;
            they fell beneath his feet.
    You armed him with strength for battle;
            you made his adversaries bow at his feet.
    You made his spiritual enemies
            turn their backs in flight,
            and you destroyed my foes.
   They cried for help, but there was no one
            to save them—
   Satan their leader abandoned them,
            You, O Lord, did not answer.
   You beat them as fine as dust borne on the wind;
            You poured them out like mud in the streets.

   Since I have flesh and blood,
            Jesus also shared in my humanity,
   so that by his death he might destroy him
            who holds the power of death—
            that is, the devil—
   and free me, who all my life was held in slavery
            by my fear of death.

   You have delivered Jesus from the attacks
            of the people;
            you have made him the head of nations:
   May those people who do not know Jesus
            now hear the gospel.
   May they obey him;
            may foreigners bow before him in repentance.
   May they all lose heart in their false gods;
            may they come trembling from their
            strongholds,
            and discover the freedom of serving you.

   The Lord Jesus lives!
            Death could not hold him.
   Praise be to my Rock!
            Exalted be God my Saviour!
   You are the God who avenges Christ,
            who subdues nations under him,
            who saves him from his spiritual enemies.
   You exalted him above his foes;
            from violent men you rescued him.
    Therefore I will praise you among
            the nations, O Lord;
            I will sing praises to your name.
    You give King Jesus great victories;
            You show unfailing kindness to your Messiah,
    to Jesus the Son of David,
            and to us, his descendants by faith, forever.

Psalm 18
For the director of music. Of David the servant of the LORD. He sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said:

1   I love you, O LORD, my strength.
2            The LORD is my rock, my fortress
            and my deliverer;
            my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.
   He is my shield and the horn of my salvation,
            my stronghold.
3   I call to the LORD, who is worthy of praise,
            and I am saved from my enemies.

4   The cords of death entangled me;
            the torrents of destruction
            overwhelmed me.
5   The cords of the grave coiled around me;
            the snares of death confronted me.
6   In my distress I called to the LORD;
            I cried to my God for help.
     From his temple he heard my voice;
            my cry came before him, into his ears.
Matt. 27:50  And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.
51  At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split.
7   The earth trembled and quaked,

Luke 23:42  Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’” 43  Jesus answered him, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”

20   The LORD has dealt with me
            according to my righteousness;
            according to the cleanness of my hands
            he has rewarded me.
1John 3:5 …he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin.

Heb. 2:14  Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—  15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

43   You have delivered me from the attacks
            of the people;
      you have made me the head of nations;
            people I did not know are subject to me.
44   As soon as they hear me, they obey me;
            foreigners cringe before me.
45   They all lose heart;
            they come trembling from their strongholds.

46   The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock!

50     He gives his king great victories;
            he shows unfailing kindness
       to his anointed,
            to David and his descendants forever.
