Psalm 91 Prayed

Psalm 91 Prayed
What Jesus gave up to save me

Lord Jesus, you dwelt in the shelter of the Most
            High
your rest was in the shadow of the Almighty.
You could say of the Lord your Father,
“You are my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
You loved the Lord your God
with all your heart, with all your soul,
with all your strength and with all your mind,
and you loved your neighbour as yourself.
And since you fully obeyed the Lord your Father
            as your God
and carefully followed all his commands,
the Lord your God could have set you high
above all the nations on earth.
All these blessings could have come upon you
            and accompanied you
since you obeyed the Lord your God:

You would have been blessed when you came in
and blessed when you went out.
The Lord would have granted that the enemies
            who rose up against you
would have been defeated before you.
They would have come at you from one direction
but fled from you in seven.
The Lord would have sent a blessing on your
            barns
and on everything you put your hand to.
The Lord would have made you the head,
            not the tail.
Since you paid attention to the commands of the
Lord your God that he give you
and you were and carefully follow them,
you would have always been at the top,
            never at the bottom.
For you did not turn aside from any
of the commands your Father gave,
to the right or to the left,
nor did you follow other gods
            and serve them.

Surely he would have saved you from the fowler’s
            snare
            and from the deadly pestilence.
He would have covered you with his feathers,
and under his wings you could have found
            refuge;
his faithfulness would have been your shield
            and rampart.
You need not have feared the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
A thousand would have fallen at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come have come near you.
You could have only observed with your eyes
and seen the punishment of the Wicked One.
For you made the Most High your dwelling—
even the Lord, was your refuge—
then no harm would have befallen you,
no disaster need have come near your tent.

   Instead, when you became flesh,
and made your dwelling among us,
you did not take upon yourself
the glory of becoming a high priest.
   Though you were rich,
yet for my sake you became poor,
so that I through you poverty might become
            rich.
Although you were in very nature God,
and you did not consider equality
with God something to be grasped,
   but you made yourself nothing,
taking the very nature of a servant,
            being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,
            you humbled yourself
            and became obedient to death—
            even death on a cross!
For you did not come to be served,
            but to serve,
and to give your life as a ransom for many.
Thank you Christ for redeeming me from the curse
            of the law
by becoming a curse for me,
   for it is written:
“Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.”

So when the devil led you to Jerusalem
and had you stand on the highest point of the
            temple.
He said “If you are the Son of God,
             throw yourself down from here.
            For it is written:
“For  he will command his angels concerning you
            to guard you in all your ways;
they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a
            stone”
Although at any time you could have called on
            your Father,
and he would have at once put at your
            disposal
more than twelve legions of angels,
    you answered the devil,
             “The Scriptures say:
‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’

Instead, for the joy set before you,
             you endured the cross,
   scorning its shame,
and sat down at the right hand of the throne
            of God.
And having disarmed the spiritual powers and
            authorities,
you made a public spectacle of them,
triumphing over them by the cross.
This is how you chose to tread upon the lion and
            the cobra;
to trample the great lion and that ancient
serpent who is the devil, or Satan.

“Because he loves me,” said your Father, “I will
            rescue him from the grave;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my
            name.
   He will call upon me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honour him.
With long life will I satisfy him
            and show him my salvation.”
And now the grace of God that brings salvation
            has appeared to all humanity.
You came into the world to save sinners —
of whom I am the worst.
For this very reason, I was shown mercy,
so that in me, the worst of sinners,
you might display your unlimited patience
as an example for those who would believe
            on you
            and receive eternal life.
So your Father buried me in baptism,
            and raised me with you
simply through my faith in his power
who raised you from the dead.
