Psalm 68 Prayed

Psalm 68 Prayed
Praising Jesus for his ascension and reign

For the reign of Jesus throughout history
   Arise, Lord Jesus, and may your enemies be
            scattered;
            may your spiritual foes flee before you.
   As smoke is blown away by the wind,
            may you blow them away;
   as wax melts before the fire,
            may the Wicked One perish before you.
   But may the righteous by faith be glad
            and rejoice before you, O God;
            may they be happy and joyful.

   We sing to you, O Jesus our God,
            we sing praise to your name,
            we extol you, who rides on the clouds.
   For after you were raised from the dead,
            you were taken up before the very eyes of the
            disciples,
            and a cloud hid you from their sight.
   You, the Son of Man, came with the  clouds of
            heaven.
   You approached your Father,
            the Ancient of Days,
            and you were led into his presence.
   You were given authority, glory and
            sovereign power.
  Therefore all peoples, nations
            and people of every language
            will worship you.
   Your dominion is an everlasting dominion that will
            not pass away.
            and your kingdom is one that will never be
            destroyed.
   Your name is the Lord Jesus—
            and we rejoice before you.
   A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows,
            are you in your holy dwelling, O God.
   You set the lonely in families,
            you lead forth the prisoners with singing;
            but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.

   When you went out of Egypt before your people
             ancient Israel, O God,
            when you marched through the wasteland,
   the earth shook,
            the heavens poured down rain,
   before God, the One of Sinai,
            before God, the God of Israel.
   You gave abundant showers, O God;
            you refreshed your weary inheritance.
    Your people settled in it,
            and from your bounty, O God, you provided
            for the poor.
   You announced the word,
            and great was the company of those who
            proclaimed it:
   “The kings and armies of Amalek fled in haste;
            in the camps men of Israel divided the plunder.
   Even while they slept among the campfires,
            the wings of your dove Israel were sheathed
            with silver,
            its feathers with shining gold.”
   When the Almighty scattered the kings in the land
            of Canaan,
            it was like snow fallen on Zalmon.

   The mountains of Bashan are majestic
            mountains;
            rugged are the mountains of Bashan.
   But we have come to Mount Zion,
            to the heavenly Jerusalem,
            the city of the living God.
   We have come to thousands upon thousands of
            angels in joyful assembly,
            to the church of the firstborn,
            whose names are written in heaven.
   We have come to God, the judge of all men,
            to the spirits of righteous men made perfect,
            to you Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant.
   Why gaze in envy, O rugged mountains of Canaan,
            at the mountain where God chooses to reign,
            where the Lord Jesus himself will dwell
            forever?
   Your chariots, O God, are tens of thousands
            and thousands of thousands;
   you have come from the Law of Sinai
            into the sanctuary of your grace.

For the reign of Jesus now
   Lord Jesus, you descended into the lower, earthly
            regions,
            you are the very one who ascended higher than
            all the heavens,
            in order to fill the whole universe.
   When you ascended on high,
            you led captives in your train;
            you received gifts from men,
   even from the rebellious—
            that you, O Lord God, might dwell there.
   Your Father raised you from the dead,
            and has seated you at his right hand in the
            heavenly realms,
   far above all rule and authority, power and
            dominion,
   and every title that can be given,
            not only in the present age but also in the one
            to come.
   And God placed all things under your feet
            and appointed you to be head over everything
            for the Church,
   which is your body, the fullness of you,
             who fills everything in every way.

   Praise be to you, Lord Jesus, to God our Saviour,
            for daily you bear our burdens.
   Therefore you are able to save us completely,
            for we come to God through you,
            because you always live to intercede for us.
   Therefore, since we have you, our great high priest
            who has gone through the heavens,
   O Jesus the Son of God,
            we will hold firmly to the faith we profess.
   For we do not have a high priest
            who is unable to sympathize with our
            weaknesses,
   but we have you,
            who has been tempted in every way,
   just as we are,
            yet you were without sin.
   You are our God, a God who saves;
            from you, Sovereign Lord Jesus,
             comes escape from death.
   For you are the Living One;
            you were dead,
   and behold you are alive forever and ever!
            And you hold the keys of death and Hades.
   And your Father, who raised you from the dead,
            will also raise us from the dead with you,
            and present us with you in his presence.

   Surely you have crushed the heads of your spiritual
            enemies,
            the hairy crowns of those who go on in their
            sins.
   O Lord, you have said to us of Satan and his
            demons;
   “I will bring them from Bashan;
            I will bring them from the depths of the sea,
    that you may plunge your feet in the blood of
            your spiritual foes,
   while the tongues of your dogs have their share in
            the victory.”
   O God of peace,
            crush Satan under our feet soon.

   Your procession has come into view, O Jesus,
            the procession of my God and King into the
            sanctuary of your Church.
    In front are the singers, after them the musicians;
            with them are the maidens playing
            tambourines.
   We praise you O God in the great congregation;
            we praise you Lord Jesus in the assembly of
            your Church.
   There is the little tribe of Baptists, leading
            them,
            there the great throng of the Anglican princes,
   and there the princes of the Pentecostals
            and of the Presbyterians.

   Summon your power, O Jesus;
            show us your strength, O Christ,
            as you have done before.
   Because the ‘Jerusalem that is above’ is free,
            and she is our mother,
            let kings and governments bring you gifts.

   Rebuke the beastly cynics who hide among the
            reeds,
            the herd of bull-headed fools among the calves
            of the nations.
   May they be humbled and offer you tribute.

   Scatter the nations who delight in war.
            Let envoys come from Egypt;
            may every continent submit itself to Jesus.

   Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth,
            sing praise to the Lord Jesus,
   sing to him who rides the ancient skies above,
            who thunders with mighty voice.
   Proclaim the power of Jesus,
            whose majesty is over his Church,
            whose power is in the skies.
   You are awesome, O Jesus, in the sanctuary of
            heaven;
   O God of the Church, give power and strength
            to your people.
             Praise be to Jesus our God!

Psalm 68
For the director of music. Of David. A psalm. A song.

1   May God arise, may his enemies be
            scattered;
            may his foes flee before him.
2   As smoke is blown away by the wind,
            may you blow them away;
      as wax melts before the fire,
            may the wicked perish before God.
3    But may the righteous be glad
            and rejoice before God;
            may they be happy and joyful.

4a   Sing to God, sing praise to his name,
            extol him who rides on the clouds—
Acts 1:9  After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.
Dan. 7:13  “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence.  14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
4b  his name is the LORD—
            and rejoice before him.
5   A father to the fatherless, a defender of
            widows,
            is God in his holy dwelling.
6   God sets the lonely in families,
            he leads forth the prisoners with singing;
            but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched
            land.

7   When you went out before your people, O
            God,
            when you marched through the
            wasteland,                                                 Selah
8   the earth shook,
            the heavens poured down rain,
      before God, the One of Sinai,
            before God, the God of Israel.
9     You gave abundant showers, O God;
            you refreshed your weary inheritance.
10   Your people settled in it,
            and from your bounty, O God, you
            provided for the poor.
11  The Lord announced the word,
            and great was the company of those who
            proclaimed it:
12   “Kings and armies flee in haste;
            in the camps men divide the plunder.
13   Even while you sleep among the campfires,
            the wings of [my] dove are sheathed with
            silver,
            its feathers with shining gold.”
14   When the Almighty scattered the kings in the
            land,
            it was like snow fallen on Zalmon.

15   The mountains of Bashan are majestic
            mountains;
            rugged are the mountains of Bashan.
Heb. 12:22  But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly,  23 to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made perfect,  24 to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant...
16   Why gaze in envy, O rugged mountains,
            at the mountain where God chooses to
            reign,
            where the LORD himself will dwell forever?
17   The chariots of God are tens of thousands
            and thousands of thousands;
            the Lord [has come] from Sinai into his
            sanctuary.

Eph. 4:9 (What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions?  10 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)
18   When you ascended on high,
            you led captives in your train;
      you received gifts from men,
            even from the rebellious—
            that you, O LORD God, might dwell there.
Eph. 1:20 which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,  21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.  22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church,  23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

19   Praise be to the Lord, to God our Saviour,
            who daily bears our burdens.             Selah
Heb. 7:25 Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
Heb. 4:14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.  15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin.
20   Our God is a God who saves;
            from the Sovereign LORD comes escape
            from death.
Rev. 1:18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.
2Cor. 4:14 because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence.

21   Surely God will crush the heads of his
            enemies,
            the hairy crowns of those who go on in
            their sins.
22   The Lord says, “I will bring them from
            Bashan;
            I will bring them from the depths of the
            sea,
23   that you may plunge your feet in the blood
            of your foes,
            while the tongues of your dogs have their
            share.”
Rom. 16:20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.

24   Your procession has come into view, O God,
            the procession of my God and King into
            the sanctuary.
25   In front are the singers, after them the
            musicians;
            with them are the maidens playing
            tambourines.
26   Praise God in the great congregation;
            praise the LORD in the assembly of Israel.
27   There is the little tribe of Benjamin, leading
            them,
            there the great throng of Judah’s princes,
            and there the princes of Zebulun and of
            Naphtali.
28   Summon your power, O God;
            show us your strength, O God, as you
            have done before.
29a   Because of your temple at Jerusalem
Gal. 4:26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother.
29b            kings will bring you gifts.
30   Rebuke the beast among the reeds,
            the herd of bulls among the calves of the
            nations.
            Humbled, may it bring bars of silver.

            Scatter the nations who delight in war.
31   Envoys will come from Egypt;
            Cush will submit herself to God.

32   Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth,
            sing praise to the Lord,                        Selah
33   to him who rides the ancient skies above,
            who thunders with mighty voice.
34   Proclaim the power of God,
            whose majesty is over Israel,
            whose power is in the skies.
35   You are awesome, O God, in your sanctuary;
            the God of Israel gives power and strength
            to his people.

            Praise be to God!
