Psalm
97 Prayed
Rejoicing in
Christ’s reign and return
You reign, Lord Jesus, let the
earth be glad;
let
the distant shores rejoice.
For your Father has set a day
when
he will judge the world with justice,
and in keeping with your
promise
we
are looking forward to a new heaven and a
new
earth,
the
home of righteousness.
Clouds and thick darkness
surrounded you;
righteousness
and justice are the foundation of
you
throne.
You are coming with the clouds,
and
every eye will see you,
even those who pierced you;
and
all the peoples of the earth will mourn
because
of you.
Fire will go before you
and
consume your foes on every side.
The heavens will disappear with
a roar;
the
elements will be destroyed by fire,
and
the earth and everything in it will be laid
bare.
You will bring to light what is
hidden in darkness,
and
you will expose the motives of everyone’s
heart.
That day will bring about the
destruction of the
heavens
by fire,
and
the elements will melt in the heat.
Your lightning will light up
the world;
the
earth will see and tremble.
The mountains will melt like
wax before you, Lord
Jesus,
before
you, the Lord of all the earth.
Then the heavens will proclaim
your righteousness,
and
all the peoples will see your glory.
For the dwelling of God will be
with humanity,
and you will live with us.
We will be your people,
and
God himself will be with us
and
you will be our God.
You
will wipe every tear from our eyes.
There will be no more death or
mourning or crying
or
pain,
for
the old order of things will have passed
away.
All who worship images will be
put to shame,
those
who boast in idols—
all ‘gods’ worship you!
The Church hears and rejoices
and
the various denominations are glad
because
of your judgments, O Lord Jesus.
For you, O Lord Jesus, are the
Most High over all
the
earth;
you
are exalted far above all gods.
Let those who love you, Lord
Jesus, hate evil,
for
you guard the lives of your faithful ones
and
you deliver us from the hand of the
Wicked One.
Light is shed upon the
righteous
and
joy on the upright in heart.
We who are righteous rejoice in
you, Lord,
and
we praise your holy name,
for this righteousness came
from you
through
faith in you
to
all us who believe.
Because you were sacrificed
once
to
take away the sins of many people;
and you will appear a second
time,
not
to bear sin,
but
to bring salvation
to
those who are waiting for you.
