Psalm 31 Prayed

Psalm 31 Prayed
Seeking comfort in Jesus in the midst
of suffering and betrayal

   In you, O Heavenly Father, Jesus took refuge;
            you never let him be put to shame;
            you delivered him in your righteousness.
   You turned your ear to him,
            you came quickly to his rescue;
   You were his rock of refuge,
            a strong fortress to save him.
    Since you were his rock and his fortress,
            for the sake of your name you lead
            and guided Jesus.
   You freed him from the trap that was set for him,
            for you were his refuge.
   As he hung on the cross,
            Jesus called out with a loud voice,
            “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”
   When he had said this, he breathed his last.
            You redeemed him from the grave,
            O Lord, the God of truth.

   I hate clinging to worthless idols;
            they betray me with their false promises.
   For none of them offer me Jesus,
            so I trust in you, O Lord.
   I will be glad and rejoice in your love,
            for you saw Jesus' affliction
            and knew the anguish of his soul.
  He shared in my humanity,
            so that by his death he might destroy
            him who holds the power of death,
            that is, the devil.
   You did not hand him over to this enemy
            but you set his feet in a spacious place.

Therefore I have hope, for I have Jesus,
            I have him, who experienced my anguish.
   For he was made me in every way,
            in order that he might become
            a merciful and faithful high priest
            in service to God,
   and that he might make atonement
            for the sins of the people.
   Because he himself suffered when he was tempted,
            he is able to help me when I am tempted.
   Therefore, be merciful to me, O Lord,
            for I am in distress;
   my eyes grow weak with sorrow,
            my soul and my body with grief.
   My life is consumed by anguish
            and my years by groaning;
    my strength fails because of my affliction,
            and my bones grow weak.
   Because of all my enemies,
            I am the utter contempt of my neighbours;
   I am a dread to my friends—
            those who see me on the street flee from me.
   I am forgotten by them as though I were dead;
            I have become like broken pottery.
   For I hear the slander of many;
            there is terror on every side;
   they conspire against me
            and plot to take my life.
   Yet in all this I have Jesus.

   So I will trust in you,  O Lord Jesus
            I say, “You are my God.”

   My times are in your hands;
            deliver me from my spiritual enemies
            and from those who pursue me.
   Let your face shine on your servant;
            save me in your unfailing love.
   Let me not be put to shame, O Lord Jesus,
            for I have cried out to you;
   but let the Wicked One be put to shame
            and lie silent in the grave.
   Let his lying lips be silenced,
            for with pride and contempt
            he speaks arrogantly against me.

   How great is your goodness,
            which you have stored up for me,
   which you bestow in the sight of people
            on those who take refuge in you.
   In the shelter of your presence you hide me
            from the intrigues of men;
   in your dwelling you keep me safe
            from accusing tongues.

   Praise be to you, Lord Jesus,
            for you showed your wonderful love to me
            when I was besieged by doubts.
   In my alarm I said,
            “I am cut off from your sight!”
   Yet you heard my cry for mercy
            when I called to you for help.

   Love the Lord Jesus, all his saints!
            The Lord preserves the faithful,
            but the proud he pays back in full.
   Be strong and take heart,
            all you who hope in the Lord Jesus.

Psalm 31
For the director of music. A psalm of David.

1   In you, O LORD, I have taken refuge;
            let me never be put to shame;
            deliver me in your righteousness.
2   Turn your ear to me,
            come quickly to my rescue;
      be my rock of refuge,
            a strong fortress to save me.
3   Since you are my rock and my fortress,
            for the sake of your name lead
            and guide me.
4   Free me from the trap that is set for me,
            for you are my refuge.
Luke 23:46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.
5   Into your hands I commit my spirit;
            redeem me, O LORD, the God of truth.

6   I hate those who cling to worthless idols;
            I trust in the LORD.
7   I will be glad and rejoice in your love,
            for you saw my affliction
            and knew the anguish of my soul.
Heb. 2:14  ..he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—
8   You have not handed me over to the enemy
            but have set my feet in a spacious place.

Heb. 2:17 For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.  18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
9   Be merciful to me, O LORD,
            for I am in distress;
            my eyes grow weak with sorrow,
            my soul and my body with grief.
10  My life is consumed by anguish
            and my years by groaning;
       my strength fails because of my affliction,
            and my bones grow weak.
11  Because of all my enemies,
            I am the utter contempt of my neighbours;
      I am a dread to my friends—
            those who see me on the street
            flee from me.
12  I am forgotten by them as though
            I were dead;
            I have become like broken pottery.
13  For I hear the slander of many;
            there is terror on every side;
      they conspire against me
            and plot to take my life.

14  But I trust in you, O LORD;
            I say, “You are my God.”
15  My times are in your hands;
            deliver me from my enemies
and from those who pursue me.
16  Let your face shine on your servant;
            save me in your unfailing love.
17  Let me not be put to shame, O LORD,
            for I have cried out to you;
       but let the wicked be put to shame
            and lie silent in the grave.
18  Let their lying lips be silenced,
            for with pride and contempt
            they speak arrogantly against the
           righteous.
19  How great is your goodness,
            which you have stored up for those
            who fear you,
       which you bestow in the sight of men
            on those who take refuge in you.
20  In the shelter of your presence you hide them
            from the intrigues of men;
       in your dwelling you keep them safe
            from accusing tongues.
21  Praise be to the LORD,
            for he showed his wonderful love to me
            when I was in a besieged city.
22  In my alarm I said,
            “I am cut off from your sight!”
      Yet you heard my cry for mercy
            when I called to you for help.

23  Love the LORD, all his saints!
            The LORD preserves the faithful,
            but the proud he pays back in full.
24  Be strong and take heart,
            all you who hope in the LORD.
