Psalm
76 Prayed
Praying for wars to cease
O Lord Jesus, you are known
among the Baptists;
your
name is great with the Presbyterians.
Your tent is with the
Independents,
Your
dwelling place among the Anglicans.
You say to all denominations:
“Love
your enemies
and pray for those who
persecute you,
that you may be children of your Father
in
heaven.”
For though we live in the
world,
we
do not wage war as the world does.
The weapons we fight with are
not the weapons of
the
world.
On
the contrary, they have divine power to
demolish
strongholds.
Therefore
we call on you to break the flashing
explosives,
the
light armour and the machine guns, the
weapons
of war.
You are resplendent with light,
more
majestic than mountains rich with game.
In your mercy, O Lord,
remember;
valiant
men lie plundered,
they
sleep their last sleep;
not one of the warriors
can
lift his hands.
At your rebuke, O God of the
Church,
may
both tank and battle ship lie still.
You alone are to be feared.
Who
can stand before you when you are
angry?
From heaven you can pronounced
judgment,
and
the world will fear and be quiet—
when you, O God, rise up to
judge,
to
save all the afflicted of the earth.
Surely your wrath against
tyrants will bring you
praise,
and
the dictators who survive your wrath will
be
restrained.
Therefore we will make vows to
the Lord Jesus our
God
and
fulfil them:
For we trust that all authority
in heaven and on
earth
has
been given to you, O Jesus.
Therefore we will go and make
disciples of all
nations,
baptizing
them in the name
of
the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit,
and teaching them to obey
everything
you have commanded us.
For surely you are with us
always,
to
the very end of the age,
and that and the gates of Hades
will not
overcome
us.
Only then will all neighbouring
lands on earth
will
bring gifts to the One to be feared.
Break the spirit of corrupt
rulers;
may
you be feared by the political leaders of
the
earth.
