Psalm 36 Prayed
Rejoicing
in the gospel
at the
Lord's Table
An oracle is within our hearts
concerning
the sinfulness of the wicked:
For all of us were dead in our
transgressions
and
sins,
in which we used to live
when
we followed the ways of this world
and of the ruler of the kingdom
of the air,
the
spirit who is now at work
in
those who are disobedient.
All of us also lived among them at one time,
gratifying
the cravings of our sinful nature
and
following its desires and thoughts.
Like the rest,
we
were by nature objects of wrath.
There was no fear of you, O God
before
our eyes.
For in our eyes we flattered
ourselves
too
much to detect or hate our sin.
The words of our mouths were
wicked
and
deceitful;
we
had ceased to be wise and to do good.
Even on our beds we plotted
evil;
we
committed ourselves to a sinful course
and
did not reject what is wrong.
Our lives were broken by sin
and
with our sin, we broke the lives of others,
and
we had no hope in the world.
But your love, O Lord, reaches
to the heavens,
your
faithfulness to the skies.
Your righteousness is like the
mighty
mountains,
your
justice like the great deep.
O Lord, you preserve both man
and beast.
How
priceless is your unfailing love!
Because of your great love for
us,
O
God who is rich in mercy,
you made us alive with Christ
even
when we were dead in transgressions—
it
is by grace we have been saved.
And you raised us up with
Christ
and
seated us with him in the heavenly realms
in
Christ Jesus,
in order that in the coming ages
you
might show us the incomparable riches
of
your grace,
expressed in your kindness to
us in Christ Jesus.
For it is by grace we have been saved,
through
faith—
and
this not from ourselves,
it is a gift from you, O
God—
not by works, so that no one can boast.
So let both high and low among
us
find
refuge in the shadow of your wings.
If anyone is thirsty,
let
them come to Jesus and drink.
May they feast on the
abundance of your house,
as
you give them drink from your river
of
delights.
When Jesus is at the table with
us,
when
we take bread and give thanks,
may our eyes be opened
and
may we recognise him in our midst,
though
he has disappeared from our sight.
With you is the fountain of
life,
so
let streams of living water flow from us,
by
filling us with your Holy Spirit.
In your light, we see light,
for
Jesus came into the world as a light,
so that no one who believes in
him
should
stay in darkness.
For he is the light of the
world,
Whoever
follows him will never walk in
darkness,
but
will have the light of life.
Continue your love to those who
know you,
your
righteousness to the upright in heart.
May the foot of the proud not
come against us,
nor
the hand of the Wicked One drive us away.
Let us see how these spiritual
evildoers;
the
spirit now at work in those who are
disobedient,
lie fallen by the victory of
the cross—
thrown
down, not able to rise!
