Psalm 51 Prayed

Psalm 51 Prayed
Praying for forgiveness

   Have mercy on me, O Father God,
            according to your unfailing love;
   according to your great compassion
            blot out my transgressions.
   Wash away all my iniquity
            and cleanse me from my sin.
   For I know my transgressions,
            and my sin is always before me.
   Against you, you only, have I sinned
            and done what is evil in your sight,
   so that you are proved right when you speak
            and justified when you judge.
   Surely I was sinful at birth,
            sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
   Surely you desire truth in the inner parts;
            you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.

   Cleanse me with the blood of Jesus,
            and I will be clean;
            wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
   Let me hear the joy and gladness of the gospel;
            let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
   Hide your face from my sins
            and blot out all my iniquity.

   Create in me a pure heart, O God,
            and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
   Do not cast me from your presence
            or take your Holy Spirit from me.
   Restore to me the joy of your salvation
            and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

   Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
            and sinners will turn back to you.
   Save me from bloodguilt, O God,
            dear Jesus who saves me,
            and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.
   O Lord Jesus, open my lips,
            and my mouth will declare your praise.

   You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
            you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings;
   for you appeared once for all
            at the end of the Old Testament age,
            to do away with sin by the sacrifice of yourself.
   You loved me and have promised
            to free me from my sins by your blood.
   You gave yourself for me to redeem me from all
            wickedness
   and to purify for yourself a people that are your
            very own,
            eager to do what is good.

   You have promised me that if I sin,
            I have one who speaks to the Father in my
            defence—
            You! Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.
   You are the atoning sacrifice for my sins,
            and not only for mine
            but also for the sins of the whole world.
   If I confess my sins, you are faithful and just
            and will forgive me my sins
            and purify me from all unrighteousness.

   Once I was alienated from you, O God my Father
            and was your enemy in my mind
            because of my evil behaviour.
   But now you have reconciled me
            by Christ’s physical body through death
            to present me holy in your sight,
            without blemish and free from accusation—
   So help me to continue in my faith,
            established and firm,
   not moved from the hope held out
            in the gospel.

   The sacrifice you require of me is a broken spirit;
            a broken and contrite heart,
            O God, you will not despise.

   Thank you that in your good pleasure
            you made Zion prosper;
            you built up the walls of Jerusalem.
   You let Jesus suffer outside the city gate
            to make the people holy through his blood.
  He was the righteous sacrifice,
            the whole burnt sacrifice to delight you.
  Now bulls need no longer be offered on your altar,
            for those sacrifices were an annual reminder
            of sins,
   because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and
            goats
            to take away sins.

Psalm 51
For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.

1   Have mercy on me, O God,
            according to your unfailing love;
      according to your great compassion
            blot out my transgressions.
2   Wash away all my iniquity
            and cleanse me from my sin.
3    For I know my transgressions,
            and my sin is always before me.
4   Against you, you only, have I sinned
            and done what is evil in your sight,
      so that you are proved right when you speak
            and justified when you judge.
5    Surely I was sinful at birth,
            sinful from the time my mother conceived
            me.
6   Surely you desire truth in the inner parts;
            you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.

7   Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
            wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
8    Let me hear joy and gladness;
            let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
9    Hide your face from my sins
            and blot out all my iniquity.

10  Create in me a pure heart, O God,
            and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11  Do not cast me from your presence
            or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12  Restore to me the joy of your salvation
            and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

13  Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
            and sinners will turn back to you.
14  Save me from bloodguilt, O God,
            the God who saves me,
            and my tongue will sing of your
            righteousness.
15  O Lord, open my lips,
            and my mouth will declare your praise.
16  You do not delight in sacrifice,
            or I would bring it;
            you do not take pleasure in burnt
            offerings.

17  The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
            a broken and contrite heart,
            O God, you will not despise.

18  In your good pleasure make Zion prosper;
            build up the walls of Jerusalem.
Heb. 13:12 And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood.
19  Then there will be righteous sacrifices,
            whole burnt offerings to delight you;
            then bulls will be offered on your altar.
Heb. 10:3 But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins,  4 because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
