Psalm 40 Prayed
Seeking
the comfort of the gospel
in the trials
of life
I waited patiently for you, O
Lord;
you
turned to me and heard my cry.
You lifted me out of the slimy
pit,
out
of the mud and mire of my sin;
You set my feet on a rock
and
gave me a firm place to stand.
You put a new song in my mouth,
a
hymn of praise to our God.
May many see your saving work
in me and fear
and
put their trust in the Lord Jesus.
Bless me as you promise to
bless all those
who
put their trust in you,
who
do not look to the proud,
or
to those who turn aside to false gods.
Many, O Lord my God,
are
the wonders you have done.
The things you planned for me
no
one can recount to you;
were I to speak and tell of
them,
they
would be too many to declare.
For you chose me in Christ
before
the creation of the world
to
be holy and blameless in your sight.
In love you predestined me to
be adopted
as
your child through Jesus Christ,
in accordance with your
pleasure and will,
to
the praise of your glorious grace,
which you have freely given me
in
Jesus, the One you love.
In him I have redemption
through his blood,
the
forgiveness of sins,
in accordance with the riches
of your grace
that you lavished on me
with all wisdom and understanding.
Sacrifice and offering you did
not desire,
but
my ears you could have pierced:
Were I your slave in ancient
Israel,
I
would say to you,
“Because
I love you, my master,
I
do not want to go free.
Take
me the door or the doorpost
of
your house
and
pierce my ear with an awl."
Then
I would be your servant for life.
But I am no longer a slave, but
your child;
and
since I am your child,
you
have made me also an heir.
Burnt offerings and sin
offerings
you
did not require,
for Christ loved me and gave
himself up for me
as
a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Make me more like Jesus,
who
gave himself wholly to you, O Father,
saying:
“Here I am, I have come—
it
is written about me in the scroll.
I desire to do your will,
O my God;
your
law is within my heart.”
May I proclaim righteousness
in
the great assembly of your Church;
I do not want to seal my lips,
as
you know, O Lord.
For you made Jesus who had no
sin
to
be sin for me,
so
that in him I might become
the
righteousness of God.
Never let me hide your
righteousness in my heart;
Help
me to speak of your faithfulness
and
salvation.
Never let me conceal your love
and your truth
from
the great assembly of the Church.
Do not withhold your mercy from
me, O Lord;
may
your love and your truth always
protect
me.
When troubles without number
surround me;
and
my sins have overtaken me,
and
I cannot see,
when they are more than the
hairs of my head,
and
my heart fails within me,
give me power, together with
all the saints,
to
grasp how wide and long
and
high and deep is the love of Christ,
and to know this love that surpasses knowledge
that
I may be filled to the measure
of
all the fullness of God.
Be pleased, O Lord, to save me;
O
Lord, come quickly to help me.
May Satan, who seeks to take my
life,
be
put to shame and confusion;
may all his dark forces who
desire my ruin
be
turned back in disgrace.
May those who say to me, “Aha!
Aha!”
be
appalled at their own shame.
But may all who seek you
rejoice
and be glad in you;
may those who love your
salvation always say,
“The
Lord Jesus be exalted!”
Yet I am poor and needy;
O
Lord Jesus, think of me.
You are my help and my
deliverer;
O
my God, do not delay.
O my God, do
not delay.
