Psalm 40 Prayed
Seeking the comfort of the gospel
in the trials of life

   I waited patiently for you, O Lord;
            you turned to me and heard my cry.
   You lifted me out of the slimy pit,
            out of the mud and mire of my sin;
   You set my feet on a rock
            and gave me a firm place to stand.
   You put a new song in my mouth,
            a hymn of praise to our God.
   May many see your saving work in me and fear
            and put their trust in the Lord Jesus.

   Bless me as you promise to bless all those
            who put their trust in you,
            who do not look to the proud,
            or to those who turn aside to false gods.
   Many, O Lord my God,
            are the wonders you have done.
   The things you planned for me
            no one can recount to you;
   were I to speak and tell of them,
            they would be too many to declare.
   For you chose me in Christ
            before the creation of the world
            to be holy and blameless in your sight.
   In love you predestined me to be adopted
            as your child through Jesus Christ,
   in accordance with your pleasure and will,
            to the praise of your glorious grace,
   which you have freely given me
            in Jesus, the One you love.
   In him I have redemption through his blood,
            the forgiveness of sins,
   in accordance with the riches of your grace
         that you lavished on me
         with all wisdom and understanding.

   Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
            but my ears you could have pierced:
   Were I your slave in ancient Israel,
            I would say to you,
            “Because I love you, my master,
            I do not want to go free.
            Take me the door or the doorpost
            of your house
            and pierce my ear with an awl."
            Then I would be your servant for life.
   But I am no longer a slave, but your child;
            and since I am your child,
            you have made me also an heir.
   Burnt offerings and sin offerings
            you did not require,
   for Christ loved me and gave himself up for me
            as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. 

    Make me more like Jesus,
            who gave himself wholly to you, O Father,
            saying:
   “Here I am, I have come—
            it is written about me in the scroll.
    I desire to do your will, O my God;
            your law is within my heart.”

   May I proclaim righteousness
            in the great assembly of your Church;
   I do not want to seal my lips,
            as you know, O Lord.
   For you made Jesus who had no sin
            to be sin for me,
            so that in him I might become
            the righteousness of God.
   Never let me hide your righteousness in my heart;
            Help me to speak of your faithfulness
            and salvation.
   Never let me conceal your love and your truth
            from the great assembly of the Church.

   Do not withhold your mercy from me, O Lord;
            may your love and your truth always
            protect me.
   When troubles without number surround me;
            and my sins have overtaken me,
            and I cannot see,
   when they are more than the hairs of my head,
            and my heart fails within me,
   give me power, together with all the saints,
            to grasp how wide and long
            and high and deep is the love of Christ, 
   and to know this love that surpasses knowledge
            that I may be filled to the measure
            of all the fullness of God.

   Be pleased, O Lord, to save me;
            O Lord, come quickly to help me.
   May Satan, who seeks to take my life,
            be put to shame and confusion;
   may all his dark forces who desire my ruin
            be turned back in disgrace.
   May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”
            be appalled at their own shame.
   But may all who seek you
            rejoice and be glad in you;
   may those who love your salvation always say,
            “The Lord Jesus be exalted!”

   Yet I am poor and needy;
            O Lord Jesus, think of me.
   You are my help and my deliverer;
            O my God, do not delay.

1   I waited patiently for the LORD;
            he turned to me and heard my cry.
2   He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
            out of the mud and mire;
     he set my feet on a rock
            and gave me a firm place to stand.
3   He put a new song in my mouth,
            a hymn of praise to our God.
      Many will see and fear
            and put their trust in the LORD.

4   Blessed is the man
            who makes the LORD his trust,
     who does not look to the proud,
            to those who turn aside to false gods.
5   Many, O LORD my God,
            are the wonders you have done.
     The things you planned for us
            no one can recount to you;
      were I to speak and tell of them,
            they would be too many to declare.
Eph. 1:4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will—  6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.  7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace 8 that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding.

6a   Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,

Ex. 21:5 “But if the servant declares, ‘I love my master and my wife and children and do not want to go free,’  6 then his master must take him before the judges. He shall take him to the door or the doorpost and pierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant for life.

Gal. 4:7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.

2Cor. 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
