Psalm 82 Prayed

Gospel Psalm 82
Praying for God to preside over our government

   O God, you preside in the great assembly of our
            nation;
            you give judgment among the politicians,
            with their god-like powers and responsibilities.
   Therefore we bring our requests, prayers,
            intercession and thanksgiving
            for everyone;
            for all in the government and all those in
            authority,
   so that we may live peaceful and quiet lives
            in all godliness and holiness.
   For this is good, and pleases you,
             our God and Saviour,
         for you want all people to be saved,
            and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
   For there is one God
             and one mediator between God and men,
            the man Christ Jesus,
            who gave himself as a ransom for all people.

   May everyone in our country
            submit themselves to the government,
            for there is no authority except that which
            you have established.
   The authorities that exist in our nation
            have been established by you, O God.
   Consequently, those who rebel against these
            authorities
            are rebelling against what you have instituted,
               so may those who do so bring judgment on
            themselves.
   May our rulers hold no terror for those who do
            right,
            but for those who do wrong.
   O Lord, we want to be free from fear of the those
            in authority.
            Help us to do what is right
            and may the government commend us for it.
   For those in government are your servants, O God,
            to do our county good.
   But for those do wrong, let them be afraid,
            for the government does not bear the right to
            punish for nothing.
   May our government be your servant, O God,
            an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the
            wrongdoer.

   You have shown our politicians what is good,
            and what you require of them:
   To act justly and to love mercy
            and to walk humbly with you, their God.
   May they never defend the unjust
            or show partiality to the wicked.
    May they defend the cause of the weak and
            fatherless;
            and maintain the rights of the poor and
            oppressed.
   May they rescue the weak and needy;
            and deliver them from the hand of the wicked.
   May they administer true justice,
            and show mercy and compassion to their
            citizens.
   May they speak the truth to each other and to us,
            and render sound judgment in our courts.
   May they not oppress the alien, the fatherless or
            the widow,
            and may they not shed innocent blood,
            or follow other gods to our harm.
  So let justice roll on like a river,
            righteousness like a never-failing stream!

    Without you, O Lord,
             our will politicians know nothing,
            they will understand nothing.
   They will walk about in darkness;
            and all the foundations of the earth will be
            shaken.
   You have delegated god-like power to them;
            power to be a blessing and power to be a curse,
            power to enrich life, and power to bring death.
   So may they remember that they will die like
            mere humans;
            that they will fall like every other ruler.

   Rise up, O God, judge the earth,
            for all the nations are your inheritance.

Psalm 82
A psalm of Asaph.

1   God presides in the great assembly;
            he gives judgment among the “gods”:
1Tim. 2:1 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone—  2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.  3 This is good, and pleases God our Saviour,  4 who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.  5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,  6 who gave himself as a ransom for all men…

Rom. 13:1               Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.  2 Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.  3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you.  4 For he is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.
Mic. 6:8   He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
2   “How long will you defend the unjust
            and show partiality to the wicked?    Selah
3   Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless;
            maintain the rights of the poor and
            oppressed.
4   Rescue the weak and needy;
            deliver them from the hand of the wicked.
Zech. 7:9 “This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another.
Zech. 8:16 These are the things you are to do: Speak the truth to each other, and render true and sound judgment in your courts;
Jer. 7:6 if you do not oppress the alien, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not follow other gods to your own harm…
Amos 5:24  But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!

5   “They know nothing, they understand nothing.
            They walk about in darkness;
            all the foundations of the earth are shaken.

6   “I said, ‘You are “gods”;
            you are all sons of the Most High.’

7   But you will die like mere men;
            you will fall like every other ruler.”

8   Rise up, O God, judge the earth,
            for all the nations are your inheritance.
