Psalm 49 Prayed
Telling
others the gospel
O Lord, may all peoples hear
this,
may
all who live in this world
listen to the gospel,
both low and high,
rich
and poor alike:
Let my mouth speak words of
wisdom;
the
utterance from my heart give
understanding
to the lost.
I will turn my ear to a
proverb;
with
the harp I will expound the riddle of
the
gospel to them:
“You need not fear when evil
days come,
when
wicked deceivers surround you—
those who trust in their wealth
and
boast of their great riches.
No mere human can redeem the
life of another
or
give to God a ransom for someone else—
the ransom for a life is too
costly,
no
payment is ever enough—
that he should live on forever
and
not see decay.
“Instead, when the time had
fully come,
God
sent his Son Jesus
to
give his life as a ransom for many
to reconcile to himself all
things,
by
making peace through his blood,
shed
on the cross.
He was not abandoned to the
grave,
nor
did his body see decay.
For God raised him from the
dead
and
glorified him,
because he wants all people to
be saved
and
to come to a knowledge of the truth.
For there is one God
and one mediator between God and humanity,
the
man Christ Jesus,
who gave himself as a ransom for all people.
“Surely you can see that wise
people die;
the
foolish and the senseless alike perish
and
leave their wealth to others.
Their tombs will remain their
houses forever,
their
dwellings for endless generations,
though
they had named lands after themselves.
But people, despite their
riches, do not endure;
they
are like the beasts that perish.
This is the fate of those who
trust in themselves,
and
of their followers,
who
approve their sayings.
Like sheep they are destined
for the grave,
and
death will feed on them.
The upright will rule over them
in the morning;
their
forms will decay in the grave,
far
from their princely mansions.
“But God can redeem your life
from the grave;
he
will surely take you to himself
if
you repent and believe the gospel.
Jesus tells you the truth, if
you hear his word
and
believe the Father who sent him
you will have eternal life
and
will not be condemned;
you
will cross over from death to life.
He makes this promise to all
who believe:
We will not all sleep,
but
we will all be changed:
in a flash, in the twinkling of
an eye,
at
the last trumpet.
For the trumpet will sound,
the
dead will be raised imperishable,
and
we will be changed.
For the perishable must clothe itself
with
the imperishable,
and
the mortal with immortality.
When the perishable has been
clothed
with
the imperishable,
and
the mortal with immortality,
then the saying that is written
will come true:
“Death
has been swallowed up in victory.”
“Where, O death, is your
victory?
Where,
O death, is your sting?”
The sting of death is sin,
and
the power of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God!
He
gives us the victory
through
our Lord Jesus Christ.
“So do not be overawed when
someone grows rich,
when
the splendour of their house increases;
for they will take nothing with
them when they die,
their
splendour will not descend with them.
Though while they lived they
counted themselves
blessed—
and
people praised them when they
prospered—
they will join the generation
of their ancestors,
who
will never see the light of life.
Anyone who has riches without
understanding
is
like the beasts that perish.
Therefore do not store up for
yourself
treasures
on earth,
where
moth and rust destroy,
and
where thieves break in and steal.
But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
where
moth and rust do not destroy,
and
where thieves do not break in and steal.
For where your treasure is,
there
your heart will be also.”
